Frequently Asked Questions

SONG SUPERVISORS AND OTHER LICENSORS

I’m busy. Why should I use your site?

At Songs for Film and TV, we have three main goals: 1) To proactively find and pre-screen great music for our site, 2) To make it easy for you to narrow down and manage a short list of songs, and 3) To make it quick and easy for you to purchase a license or get a quote. If you have suggestions that will help us better meet any of these goals, please email us at info@songsforfilmandtv.com

What is the turnaround time for a Quote?

We will get back to you within 24 hours or less, probably much less.

How can I quickly and easily manage songs that I like?

Click on the heart symbol next to the song description to add it to “Favorites.” When you add a song to Favorites, you will be able to enter notes about that song, such as the program and scene that you’re thinking about. You can always view your favorite song list by clicking on the Favorites tab at the top of the page.

How much does it cost to license a song?

A license for a song can cost anywhere from hundreds of dollars to many thousands of dollars, depending on a number of usage components.

Can I download a song for evaluation purposes?

If you need more than a streaming version of the song and you are registered for our site, please email us at info@songsforfilmandtv.com with your username for our site, the title and song ID#, and we will email you the song. As it states in our terms and conditions, you will have a non-transferable, non-exclusive license to store, reproduce (including making a copy onto your computer's hard drive), and use the song solely for evaluation purposes, to test and evaluate the song in your production or project, including using and editing the song into audio/video formats for demonstration purposes, but only when, in good faith, use of the specific song is intended. You may NOT copy or publish the song to a network or bulletin board, or sublicense, re-license, rent, or lease or otherwise distribute the song.

Are the songs Pre-Cleared and Pre-Priced?

All of our songs are pre-cleared. At Songs for Film and TV some of our songs are pre-priced but others require you to fill out a Quote Request Form.

Can I view the license before purchase?

Yes, email licenses@songsforfilmandtv.com to request a copy of our standard license. If you are purchasing a pre-priced song directly from our site, all blank fields will be filled out by you during the pricing process.

What if your standard license does not fit my needs?

Please contact us. We will be happy to customize a license for you!

SONGWRITERS AND PUBLISHERS

I'm a songwriter. How do I submit my music?

Please click on the Artist Submissions link at the bottom of the page and follow instructions.

What type of music does Songs for Film and TV accept?

We are looking for the highest caliber of song across all genres. We prefer to offer both vocal and instrumental versions if available. If we don’t currently provide a search for your genre, we may consider adding one.

Can I submit songs that have co-writers?

Yes, but all co-writers must sign the contract between you and Songs for Film and TV.

Who can legally submit music for licensing?

Either one of the following must apply: 1) You must own 100% of the master and publishing. In this case songs must have been 100% written and recorded by you without samples. 2) Our contract must have the original signature of every writer, publisher and master owner. Every person who has any ownership over any part of the master recording or the publishing or has any rights over the music in any way must allow you to represent them and to receive and distribute to them any money owed from licensing of songs of which they have part ownership. You are fully responsible for the consequences of failing to get all necessary signatures. You indemnify Songs for Film and TV and our clients if your submission infringes on the rights of another person.

Can I submit songs that have samples?

You must be absolutely certain that you have complete rights to all of the elements used in any recordings you submit to us. Unauthorized samples are NOT permitted. If you wish to submit music that contains any samples you must be certain that they are royalty-free and cleared for use. Please keep a copy of the sample program’s copyright agreement. You indemnify Songs for Film and TV and our clients if your submission infringes anyone’s rights.

Do you take any ownership in my music?

No. You retain ownership or copyright of the master recordings and the musical compositions; you are only granting to Songs for Film and TV the non-exclusive right to use and license the Music. Exclusive licenses will be granted only with your express prior written approval.

I'm a songwriter with a record or publishing deal. Can I still apply?

You and your publisher or record label may still use Songs for Film and TV to help promote and license your songs. Our Agreement must include a name, email and signature from every person or company that has any control over the copyright in your masters and songs.

If my songs are accepted into the catalog, what does Songs for Film and TV take?

We only take a percentage of what we directly place! If you get your songs placed yourself or through other means, we take nothing. Songs for Film and TV (SFFTV) will retain a percentage of license fees received for your music, which will be based upon percentages agreed upon in your contract with SFFTV. SFFTV will account to you and remit your share of the monies received by SFFTV. Payments will be made quarterly.

Who might license my music?

Our target clients are the top Song Supervisors for major motion pictures and television, including programming, commercials, and promotional spots. We may also license your songs for many other uses including but not limited to videograms and DVDs, Internet, video games, radio spots, etc.

How do I update my address or payment information?

We want to be sure we mail your check to the appropriate place -- Please call us to make sure we update the information.

What about my “back end” Performance Royalties?

Unless otherwise agreed upon by Songs for Film and TV (SFFTV), you give SFFTV your permission to register your Music with performing rights societies, ie, ASCAP (www.ascap.com), BMI (www.bmi.com) or SESAC (www.sesac.com), under alternate titles in order to track the royalties from placements that SFFTV has directly generated. Both you (including all writers/publishers of your songs) and SFFTV will receive directly from the performing rights society a percentage of performance royalties based on the percentage that you and SFFTV discuss and agree upon in your contract. SFFTV will never receive a percentage of so called “writers share” royalties. Songs for Film and TV will aggressively pursue every royalty owed to you by ensuring the broadcast client fills in and submits accurate cue sheets in both the USA and internationally.

How much do you sell my songs for?

A license for a song can cost anywhere from hundreds of dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on a number of usage components. The type of use and the current market determines our prices. Both pricing and the categories of use that we offer may change over time. Any performing rights royalties due to you will be calculated and paid by whichever society you are a member (if any) such as ASCAP, BMI or SESAC,

Will you tell me if a song has been placed?

We will do our best to inform you of any significant placements by email or phone. You will also receive a statement each quarter detailing your placements in the previous 3-month period. Please contact us anytime if you would like to check your status.

How do I cancel?

You may cancel anytime by sending us a letter giving us 90-days notice. Send the letter to Songs for Film and TV, 3500 Anderson Rd, Davis, CA 95616. We may decide to take your songs down from the search engine immediately, but may still license the song for up to 90 days from receipt of cancellation letter. Our reasoning? We feel that it would be unfair to clients who may have your song saved in “favorites” to suddenly remove the song from the site without notice.

If my songs are on your site, what do I do about taxes?

A) If Songs for Film and TV is cutting checks to you as an individual: We will issue you a 1099 form at the end of the year. You must provide your social security number on the contract with Songs for Film and TV. B) If Songs for Film and TV is cutting checks to your company: You must provide us with your Federal Tax ID number and a completed W-9 form. C) If you are not a US-resident, please fill out a W-8 BEN.
